I found Hollywood to be a dive for the most part. Drug dealers and hookers hanging out on the streets. If you want to go clubbing, try around Malibu or Venice Beach (better chance of seeing celebs there). Never been to Calabasas…
Hollywood is generally old and seedy, but there is a redevelopment effort underway, so it’s worth a trip for tourists, and maybe best just a driving tour along Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards, so you can say you’ve seen it.
Clubs — not my cup of tea. Celebrities — not really, more to the west side, and a few downtown, as they live in lofts (like diCaprio).
Calabasas is a suburb — tract houses and shopping centers all the way. Some people prefer that to the city.
Hollywood is an unique place, but I would recommend going there during the day and not at night. Celebs can be seen there, but its hit or miss if you do. Clubbing is better and safer in the beach areas. Don’t know about Calabasa.
During the day Hollywood Blvd is nice..Its filled with tourist and the rift raft of Los Angeles..Clubs in Hollywood should be avoided unless they are the big name clubs..
Celebrities frequent the Sunset Strip located just west of Hollywood..They can be either dining, performing, or visiting the many expensive member only clubs.
Hollywood Boulevard is ready for its close-up, thanks to years of urban renewal and renovation. Enjoy the Walk of Fame, Entertainment Museum, Chinese Theatre and more. You can see a lot for free. The Hollywood & Highland complex has lots of shops and restaurants, and the Kodak Theater (home of the Academy Awards). I also like the El Capitan theater, because it has been restored to its former glory.
The clubs on Sunset Blvd are really hot, but you’d better dress to impress and be on the guest list. Otherwise, you probably won’t get in. And no, you won’t get a chance to see a celeb. They have their own VIP areas and side entrances.
Calabasas is a nice suburb, just west of the San Fernando Valley. Sagebrush Cantina is a fun place, but the rest is basically suburbia, found in any suburb of any large city: Nice houses, mini-malls, Starbuck’s, McDonald’s, Taco Bell, etc.
