fly to LA and rent a car or to phoenix and drive from there I have done the trip several times in various directions and it is well worth it, also see the mojave, death valley, painted desert, sunset crater, hoover dam, kings canyon park , and loads of other sights
You start by picking the least expensive airport + rental car combination and going from there
The distances between places in the West are often very far so do yourself a favor and get mid-sized to full sized car like a Chevy Impala
